ASBESTOS AIR MONITORING

What is air monitoring

Asbestos air monitoring (also known as asbestos air testing) is a requirement of the ‘Work Health and Safety (General) Regulation 2022’. Its purpose is to monitor fibre levels during the asbestos removal process or if an ACM has been disturbed. It is essential during asbestos four-stage clearances, leading to a certificate of reoccupation. Analysts use specialist equipment to monitor the air and work in accordance with NOHSC:3003.

The Importance of Asbestos Air Monitoring

Understanding the importance of Asbestos Air Monitoring is paramount. Airborne asbestos fibres, when inhaled, pose severe health risks. Envirotech’s asbestos air testing and monitoring service provides valuable information to help you ensure the concentration of these fibres are within analytical technique and guidance limits. Asbestos air monitoring is particularly crucial during asbestos removal, as it confirms the effectiveness of safety measures and validates the space for reoccupation.

The main types of asbestos air monitoring:

    • Conducted before asbestos removal or disturbance work begins.

    • Assesses the existing airborne fibre levels in an area.

    • Helps establish a baseline to compare with post-removal results.

    • Performed outside an enclosure during asbestos removal.

    • Ensures there are no breaches in the containment setup.

    • Helps confirm that asbestos fibres are not escaping into surrounding areas.

Friable enclosure monitoring must be carried out by a Licensed Asbestos Assessor (LAA).

    • Conducted after asbestos work is completed or in areas where there has been suspected disturbance.

    • Verifies that fibre levels remain within safe limits.

    • Commonly used in occupied buildings or adjacent areas where asbestos removal has taken place.

    • Involves testing the exposure levels of workers handling asbestos.

    • Determines if their personal exposure is within legal limits.

    • Helps assess the effectiveness of control measures like respiratory protection.

    • A legal requirement after Friable asbestos removal (Class A work).

    • Involves a four-stage process:

      1. Preliminary inspection (ensuring all asbestos is removed).

      2. Thorough visual inspection inside the enclosure.

      3. Air monitoring (Phase Contrast Microscopy - PCM) to check fibre levels.

      4. Final assessment and dismantling of the enclosure if results are within legal limits.

Clearance monitoring must be carried out by a Licensed Asbestos Assessor (LAA).

    • Performed outside an area during asbestos removal.

    • Ensures safe work methods are effective.

    • Helps confirm that asbestos fibres are not escaping into surrounding areas.

Friable air monitoring must be carried out by a Licensed Asbestos Assessor (LAA).
